Thailand

Welcome to readers from the US Virgin Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Oman and the Philippines With Vanessa Mae hitting the pistes in Sochi I felt it time to review my time in Thailand Thailand distinguishes itself by having avoided colonisation by any country while all around the French and the British took over Burma, Vietnam, India, Laos and Vietnam and even China for a while. Phuket In Phuket one got the sense of a set-up designed for intense levels of hedonism. Bars, joints busting with Thai flesh. You can find the same kind thing in Ayia Napa, Sihanoukville, Rhodes or Ibiza with less flesh on offer. In the rainy season the resort turns into a dripping wet ghost town, one where I got infected with jungle foot-rot. Within two days one foot, continually soaked in the copious rains, had cracked open at the heel so that I could look into it. Like looking into a fissure in rock. If you like tea with your travel visit GuerillaZ...

Walking Meditation in Laos

Vat Sokpaluang If you Read The  Dragon Apparent  by Norman Lewis it becomes clear it, or at least a great deal clearer, that Laos is an incredibly interesting place that does not present itself to you in the same assertive way as its neighbors.  I found Vientiane quite the opposite to the offhand description of Vientiane in Paul Theroux's The Great Railway Bazaar. I spent close to a month in Laos. I stayed in Vientiane for all of that time.   It was 95 degrees every day except one.  When you arrive in Vientiane it quickly becomes clear that it is all about the lives and customs of its people. Perhaps it occurs to the traveller that they might become an amateur of pagoda architecture as it did me but I gave that up very quickly.  According to Lewis, the accumulation of wealth which is not to be used for definite, approved purposes, causes a man to lose prestige among his neighbours, just as in the We...

Kota Bharu and the Perhentian Islands

Image
Welcome to readers from Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica  At the end of a long European winter places like these islands begin to appeal. Chilling on this island brought a Ronny Jordan track to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT0bdaYB2Ns Called ' The Jackal' But first you have to arrive at ... Kota Bharu When I arrived in Kota Bharu I was very hungry. The two fried eggs on a plate with Maggi chilli sauce were divine. I've never enjoyed eggs so much. Taken in a tent restaurant near the bus station. The Market At sundown the rats come shopping for left over produce. They seemed to come out in order of seniority with the larger ones emerging later. It was quite a sight as they jogged casually around the city centre. They were a pretty confident rat pack. This element of the city sent me inside McDonalds for a breather. Knee-cleaner Inside was this sign. Thing was I ha...

Planet of the Apes via New York City

Life is short. When we travel we have never have enough time for gladdening the hearts of those we meet. We must make haste to be kinder. Henri Frederic Amiel The Osa Peninsula Costa Rica, Central America On the way to San Juan in Costa Rica I got to stop in the Big Apple. New York is a city I like immensely. The hit as you arrive from the airport is like no other. Something to do with the saturation of the mind by New York movies. I stayed in New Jersey which is pretty interesting in itself. Became one of the 'bridge and tunnel' crowd for a week. In late November NY is freezing and the contrast with Costa Rica was just funny. There they were in the hot, wet, green season. After a nerve-wracking TAP flight out of JFK the tropics was only five hours away. At San Juan airport a jeep awaited. Somewhere. After a cabal of chatter the keys arrived. Only later did it become clear that there was no suspension. Pity because a 4WD was quite important. It wa...
